What is a group of cats called?

July 15, 2013 - Author: Bummer

So… a questions arose today about cats that I did not know the answer to.

When referring to my cats as a group, what is that called?

Knowing that there must be a word to describe a group of cats other than just saying my “cats”… I turned to, and wiki answers provided the following:

The correct term for referring to a group of cats is ‘clowder’.  There are also two other valid ways to refer to a group of cats, which are ’clutter’ and ‘glaring’.
In addition to this, if one wants to refer to a group of wild cats, the correct terms are ‘dowt’ and ‘destruction’. A male cat, when neutered, is called a “gib”, when not, is called a “tom”. Female cats are known as “molly”.
The word “cat” itself derives from the Old English “catt”. Catt has its source in the Late Latin “catus”, meaning: “domestic cat”. This Late Latin word probably derives from an Afro-Asiatic word: “kaddîska”, meaning “wild cat”.
Of Course, google provided more info than a simple one word answer, but I now know what a group of cats are properly called and much, much, more.  and now so do you!
